Espaço, (in)visibilidade e pertença em territórios turísticos, O Bairro do Castelo

Num território profundamente alterado pela fabricação das atrações turísticas, moradores e comerciantes procuram a pertença e o direito a um lugar da cidade que tanto se expande como se retrai. Para uns, o fluxo turístico alarga o horizonte de oportunidades. Para outros, novas fronteiras reconfiguram a vida no bairro, retraindo o futuro. Ao mesmo tempo, existem dimensões que aproximam o “local” e o “turístico”, trazendo-os para domínios comuns em que as distinções entre um e outro são diluídas.

As atrações turísticas dominantes produzem paisagens visuais e sonoras no bairro. Por sua vez, as paisagens produzem narrativas e espaços, que introduzem ou excluem os moradores, os comerciantes e os turistas. Estas negociações ou conflitos podem traduzir-se em meios de visibilidade ou de invisibilidade. A visibilidade leva-nos a questões como “que representações?” e a invisibilidade a questões como “o património de quem?”.

As reconfigurações do território, desde os processos de reabilitação urbana à gentrificação turística, trouxeram novas relações de poder e novas autoridades para os espaços do bairro. A pertença ao bairro, tanto como as suas formas de renovação e perpetuação, é ameaçada pelas tensões sentidas na ocupação física, narrativa e simbólica onde os limites dessa pertença são definidos. O espaço público do bairro presenteia-nos uma experiência de saturação e vazio que traduz o fosso (e o reencontro) entre diferentes grupos (e gerações) num ponto de transição.

Como é que se pertence, e não se pertence, a um lugar turístico como o Bairro do Castelo?

A proposta para esta caminhada é que os participantes tenham acesso à experiência de confinamento e desconfinamento do (e no) bairro, a partir histórias e paisagens sonoras mapeadas, recolhidas no contexto de um projeto de investigação etnográfica, financiado pela FCT, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, no âmbito do projeto Sounds of tourism (PTDC/ART-PER/32417/2017).

Os registos feitos nesse período liminar de suspensão e transição permitiram um olhar sobre as várias camadas que constituem o bairro e as suas transformações, desde as memórias de um tempo pré-turístico ao cenário de um bairro pós-turismo, e os futuros possíveis nos imaginários de quem fica. À medida que o desconfinamento se dá, podemos observar quase uma a uma, a chegada, a sobreposição e a coexistência destas camadas. Ao articular estes registos, temos acesso a um olhar que ultrapassa a polarização comum do “local” e do “turístico”, contornando a ideia de que um é anulado pelo outro. O objetivo da caminhada pelo bairro é aceder aos encontros e aos desencontros que se dão na relação do bairro com o lugar turístico, escutando os testemunhos de habitantes, comerciantes e artistas, experienciando na primeira pessoa os ambientes que se tornam lugares através das sensações do vazio e da presença, das fronteiras e dos encontros, conhecendo os conflitos e as negociações.

In a territory profoundly altered by the manufacture of tourist attractions, residents and traders seek belonging and the right to a place in the city that both expands and retracts. For some, the tourist flow broadens the horizon of opportunities. For others, new frontiers reconfigure neighborhood life, shrinking the future. At the same time, there are dimensions that bring together the “local” and the “tourist”, bringing them to common domains in which the distinctions between one and the other are diluted.

The dominant tourist attractions produce visual and soundscapes in the neighborhood. In turn, landscapes produce narratives and spaces, which introduce or exclude residents, traders and tourists. These negotiations or conflicts can translate into means of visibility or invisibility. Visibility leads us to questions like “what representations?” and invisibility to questions such as “whose heritage?”.

The reconfigurations of the territory, from the processes of urban rehabilitation to tourist gentrification, brought new power relations and new authorities to the spaces of the neighborhood. Belonging to the neighbourhood, as well as its forms of renewal and perpetuation, is threatened by the tensions felt in the physical, narrative and symbolic occupation where the limits of this belonging are defined. The public space of the neighborhood presents us with an experience of saturation and emptiness that translates the gap (and the reunion) between different groups (and generations) at a point of transition.

How do you belong, and don't belong, to a tourist place like Bairro do Castelo?

The proposal for this walk is that participants have access to the experience of confinement and lack of confinement in (and in) the neighborhood, based on mapped stories and soundscapes, collected in the context of an ethnographic research project, funded by FCT, Fundação para a Ciência and Technology, within the scope of the Sounds of tourism project (PTDC/ART-PER/32417/2017).

The records made in this liminal period of suspension and transition allowed a look at the various layers that constitute the neighborhood and its transformations, from the memories of a pre-tourist time to the scenario of a post-tourism neighborhood, and the possible futures in the imaginary of who stays. As the lack of definition takes place, we can observe, almost one by one, the arrival, the overlap and the coexistence of these layers. By articulating these records, we have access to a view that goes beyond the common polarization of the “local” and the “tourist”, bypassing the idea that one is annulled by the other. The objective of the walk through the neighborhood is to access the encounters and disagreements that occur in the relationship between the neighborhood and the tourist place, listening to the testimonies of inhabitants, merchants and artists, experiencing in the first person the environments that become places through the sensations of emptiness. and presence, borders and encounters, knowing conflicts and negotiations.
